Who Says You Have to Keep It Serious?

Having a little fun with your wedding vows is one way you can brighten the ceremony’s mood and add personality plus affection. Like this:

Groom: I promise to love and cherish you as much as I do our dog, Spot. From this day forward, I will lint roll the chairs whenever your parents visit. I will love you in sickness and in health, as long as you take care of the vet visits. I promise to cuddle with you as much as I do Spot and pick you up treats whenever he gets some, too.

Bride: From this day forward, I promise to declaw my cat Fluffy so that you are not scratched. I will always make sure the litter box is clean and will keep Fluffy out of Spot’s house. I will love you for richer or poorer, so long as Fluffy gets the gourmet cat food.

Literary Quotes Or Readings As an Intro

When you’re writing your own vows, why not turn to the best authors for your inspiration? Couples have used quotes from Dr. Suess to Rilke for unusual vows. We’ve chosen a particular favorite from Richard Bachman:

A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we’re safe in our own paradise. Our soulmate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we’re two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we’ve found the right person. Our soulmate is the one who makes life come to life.

Short, Sweet and to the Point Wedding Vows

We realize not every couple wants to have a 3-hour ceremony with long speeches. For some, the best wedding vows are the short-but-personal promises:

When you need someone to encourage you, I want it to be me. When you need a helping hand, I want it to be mine. When you long for someone to smile at, turn to me. When you have something to share, share it with me.

A More Emotional and Romantic Approach

If you’re a more romantic couple, you’ll want to express the depth of your feelings in your wedding vows. Speaking romantically to your partner can be more difficult for making personalized wedding vows. This is one we like:

From the moment I first saw you, I knew you were the one with whom I wanted to share my life. Your beauty, heart, and mind inspire me to be the best person I can be. I promise to love you for eternity, respectingyou, honoring you, being faithful to you, and sharing my life with you. This is my solemn vow.

Your Favorite Film Can Play a Role in Your Vows

While it’s typical for brides to be inspired by films for ceremony inspiration, sometimes the grooms want to include their favorites, too. It doesn’t have to be cheesy if you’re both sincere (and enjoy it). Look at these Star Wars vows to see what we mean:

Han

Princess, I love you more than I love the Millennium Falcon. I’ll give up a lifetime riding the galaxies in search of treasure with Chewie just to be with you. Together we can withstand anything, even the Death Star, Jabba the Hut and Darth Vader. Come with me and we will make this world and the others around it ours. I’ll take part in any rebellion you want and pledge my life and love to you, Princess.

Leia

Han, no matter what world we crash land on, I know that you will take good care of us. No matter what happened in the past, I know you are brave, intelligent and I love you. Together we can stand against injustice wherever we find it and bring freedom to our world.
